Hedgehog: Callie

This little lady, Callie, came in after being found out during the day on her own. The kind gentleman scooped her up and called us, where

we suggested that he bring her into us. She arrived cold and wet and at 270g she was unable to survive the winter.

What we needed to do was to warm her up and administer fluids as she was obviously struggling. We popped her in an incubator immediately as warming her up was a priority - a cold wet hoglet would be unlikely to survive in this condition if left alone. Callie was so small and cold, we did wonder if she had been found in time.

The next few days were touch and go as she did not seem to make much of an improvement, but it was still early days and we had everything crossed for her.

Some animals come in and you are just willing them to get better and Callie was definitely one of those. By the end of the week, we felt we were turning a corner as she was now eating well so we moved her out of the incubator and into a larger cage - but still using a heat mat.

We are very happy to say our little Callie has done an amazing job and we are thrilled with her progress. She will remain with us now until the spring when she will be released into a safe garden where she will be free to have her own babies and help increase a very fragile hedgehog population.
