emergency care in the snow
Most of our wildlife can cope with the cold but will not survive without food and water. Some creatures hibernate when food supplys disappear , some migrate but most of wildlife braves the winter with us,
Food gives energy and energy is heat. Extreme weather can also prevent our wildlife from finding its natural food.
Birds and wildlife will need feeding as in many cases their food supply will be unavailable.
Nuts, fat balls, seeds meal worms, left over cakes and bread will be good for most birds and squirrels and but water is essential . Birds will use nesting boxes and garages, porches and sheds for shelter.
Waterfowl not only drink the water they swim in but also feed in it. Frozen ponds will prevent them from finding food or water. Breads, seeds and meal worms will help them survive along with water taken along in a bucket.
Foxes, badgers and hedgehogs eat vast amounts of earthworms and beetles and none of these will be available through the frozen ground. They would all benefit from left over cakes and bread and peanuts and dog food. Badgers will benefit from hay for their bedding, just leave it out side their setts.
Hedgehogs often wake through the winter hibernation so please be vigilant for them especially any underweight hedgehogs as these should be taken to your nearest wildlife rescues. Minimum weight is 650g
Deer will eat bread and cakes, they will also eat goat food and rabbit mix. Deer are often unable to find the grass and shoots they need under snow.
If you are concerned about specific creatures please do not hesitate to contact us for advice and help on all aspects of wildlife care through this cold weather.
Food and water are a matter of life and death to our creatures please help them through this difficult time.

Please note that under normal circumstances we do not recommend feeding wild animals cakes as just like us it’s not good for their health on a long term basis. This is in extreme weather only. Always go for the health option where ever possible and ensure your safety first.
FREEZING PONDS AND AMPHIBIANS
Ponds are a fantastic ways of attracting wildlife into your garden and create permanent and temporary homes for a wide spectrum of insects and amphibians.
Fast flowing water does not freeze as you can see from this man made stream below only the slower moving edges have frozen. However in extreme weather a powerful pump will be needed to prevent water freezing.
Even when the pond freezes over fully life continues underneath. Many amphibians hibernate in the sludge at the bottom of the pond. Most amphibians are equipped for this temporary freeze. If the weather is harsh and prolonged the freeze can sometimes trap harmful gasses below the ice.
Do not attempt to smash the ice. To create a hole in your frozen pond place a bottle filled with hot water on the ice and it will slowly melt a hole and allow any trapped gasses to release. If this is carried out daily in extreme weather it can be very effective. During short freeze periods your pond life will be normally be fine.
Below is a list of other items we desperately need.
Hospitalization Cages
We are in need of specialist hospitalization cages .
The cost of these cages range from £386 to £4900 for the units we require. We are currently raising money for these to help our orphans and patients. We have found these cages to be invaluable as they offer the ultimate level in safety and hygiene, which enables us to give our patients the expert care and attention to enable them to recover. These are designed specifically for our needs.
If your local Veterinary Practice or reserch laboratories are furbishing, please let us know as they may be removing and replacing cages that we can use.

Cat and Dog Food

We need cat and dog food, it can be dry or wet, any type is just fine.
If you have a fussy cat or dog and you keep trying new food and they don't like it, please send the rest of the food to us as our cute patients are not so fussy.
One sachet of cat food will feed a baby hedgehog for a day so every little really does help. No donation is too small.
Medical Equipment

We are always in need of medical equipment to treat our wildlife and would be grateful for any pre loved items from veterinary surgeries and animals hospitals.
We are happy to get expensive machines repaired so if you know of any vets being refurbished ask them if we can have any of their old equipment. This equipment is very expensive but really does improve our level of care.
Old Towels

We use thousands of old towels each year. If you are having a clear out in your airing cupboard or a colour change in your bathroom, WC or if you are downsizing, clearing out for a relative or if you just hate your towels please let us have them. Many of our angels are injured, hay and straw can get into wounds and irratate them, so towels are just perfect.

SCHOOL SPONSORSHIP
Many schools have charities for a year. Why not suggest us to your school? As a wildlife rescue we deal daily with casualties that happen through a lack of understanding. We see fear and misunderstanding of the creatures that surround us.
But actually they all have very special roles and purposes. By sharing our experience with children and showing them some of the wildlife that surrounds them, we hope that in the future these would-be custodians of our planet will make good decisions and ensure our survival alongside our precious wildlife in a natural balance
We could have a stall at your school fete. One way you can help us is to organize your own fundraising events This could be at school, work or at home with family and friends. We have suggested a few ideas below to help with your fundraising on our behalf. READ MORE

How we started
Whilst out walking with my dog in the early 1980's I found a small hedgehog stuck in a fence. He was too fat to go through and his prickles wouldn't let him go back.
He had been pushing so long in an attempt to free himself that the wire had cut into his body and his leg was bleeding where he had pushed and pushed against the ground. I had in my handbag a pair of pliers (no surprise to anyone who knows me) I cut the wire and removed the hedgehog READ MORE
